SSH
Telnet Software
Secure Shell
What is SSH Telnet?
SSH encrypts all of your transactions
between your home/business computer and your web hosted account(s).
This includes your password and login name. Telnet and FTP
software send your login name and password and files
across your local network (if you have one)
and the Internet without any encryption
or protection.
This leaves your login password and login
name vulnerable to those with malicious intent. Such people
actively use packet sniffers to search for such information.
Malicious packet sniffing software can be as close as someone in an
office using this software to someone hundreds of miles away.
Note that the majority of packet sniffers
are used with no malicious intent, but rather to examine network traffic
(from measuring the network load to detecting and deflecting
denial-of-service attacks).
Using SSH Telnet software means that packet
sniffing software cannot determine the information you are sending or
receiving such as your password, your user login id, order logs (that
typically contain confidential CC info.), databases, etc., etc.
There may sometimes be a few more steps to
setting up SSH Telnet software, but once setup is done, logging in and
out is just like using Telnet and FTP software.
The following are listed in no particular
order. We don't make any guarantee the software will work on your
system, nor have we tested all the software on our system. In
other words, it's a good idea to download a trial copy first, before
purchasing any software.
Some SSH software will have problems
operating while other SSH software is installed. It's best to only
install one SSH software at a time during
evaluation.
Prices accurate as of
9/7/04,
are for a single user license, and are in $USD.
If a choice is available, choose workstation and not server.

MS Windows SSH Telnet
- FREE Versions |
|
Disadvantages of FREE
versions:
-
FREE versions are
not as polished and as a result they are typically more
challenging to use.
-
FREE versions are
also typically not updated very often.
-
FREE versions are
also usually more command line based rather than sporting an
easy to use Graphical User Interface.
-
Not all FREE
versions have these mentioned limitations. It pays to
review all your options.
